Ryan Taylor was born on November 16, 1987 and grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He graduated from Mount Tabor High School after an impressive athletic career. During his senior year, for example, Ryan Taylor had 64 receptions for 1,180 yards and scored 13 touchdowns which was the school single-season record in each. Ryan Taylor earned a spot on the North Carolina's Shrine Bowl team and The Charlotte Observer ranked Ryan Taylor the 21st top player in the state. Though he was also an accomplished lacrosse player, he turned down a scholarship offer out of high school to play football for North Carolina Tarheels instead. Good choice, Ryan Taylor!
In 2006, Ryan Taylor competed as a true freshman for the North Carolina Tarheels football team. He competed in 11 games and was put mostly on special teams. By season's end, Ryan Taylor had notched four tackles, of which were two solo stops and two assists.
In 2007, sophomore Ryan Taylor had five tackles and was regarded as a special teams top performer. He was also a special teams player of the week.
In 2008, Ryan Taylor earned captain honors on the special teams. He had 19 tackles and was also a reserve linebacker. He also made a splash by playing offense, defense, and special teams in a single game, making him one of the few North Carolina Tarheels players to do so.
